Beyond Supplements: Supporting patients mental, emotional and spiritual health with Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND

Course Description:

Mental health conditions are on the rise. As a profession, we need to learn how to support patients’ mental health with a compassionate approach – first to ourselves and then to our patients. You can only guide a patient as far as you have been guided yourself. It is imperative that we as healers, ensure that we have embodied a key principle in medicine: Physician, Heal thyself. There is a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating that social and physical environments that threaten human development (ie trauma) can lead to short-term physiologic and psychological adjustments that are necessary for immediate survival, but which may come at a significant cost to long-term health outcomes, learning, behaviour and longevity. As a consequence virtually everything that is “wrong with your patients” began as a survival mechanism in childhood. In this talk, learn how to go beyond the diagnosis to understand the underlying dysfunctional patterns that can form in childhood which become compensation mechanisms in adulthood. By examining core beliefs, limiting beliefs and unveiling shadow beliefs we can get to the root causes of our suffering.

Discover how our emotional well-being and our social connectivity are intimately intertwined with health. Chronic illnesses may not be separate and distinct diseases but multilayered processes that reflect compensations to the environmental influences we are exposed to. As human beings, we are not simply physical entities. We have minds, that result in the thoughts we think. We have emotions, that result in what we feel and we translate these feelings into meaning. Ultimately, we are spiritual beings. As a profession we acknowledge the spiritual aspect of healing but we don’t give a common language to express it. Learn the language of spirit by understanding compassion, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and the role of love in medicine.

Clinical Takeaways:

  • Understand the role of attachment, attunement and authenticity in trauma.
  • Learn how to guide your patients through mindfulness practices in present-moment awareness
  • Understand how to navigate emotional triggers and reactivity
  • Identify how to differentiate between the voice of the mind and the whispers of the heart
  • Discover what unconscious commitments are holding your patients back in implementing the changes you are asking them to make
