Course Description:

Session Description:

Disorders of gut-brain interactions (formerly known as functional GI conditions) affect around 40% of the population worldwide - and disproportionately more in women of child-bearing years, with high levels of symptoms affecting their day-to-day quality of life. And yet, the stigma around these conditions still exist. We need to be looking at this differently. Within conditions that are characterized by a combination of alterations in the mucosa & gut microbiota as well as motility changes, hypersensitivity & altered CNS processing it’s a lot to consider. But the critical abnormality is believed to be gut-brain communication, yet our treatments often simplify this concept at best and ignore it at worst. It goes well beyond stress and mental health. This lecture will examine our new understanding of DGBIs, what the gut-brain connection is and is not, risks associated with standard care and coordinated treatment plans to get you going next week!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the hallmarks of disorders of the gut-brain connection - what they are and what they are not.
  2. List the risks associated with the standard of care.
  3. Describe treatment options available for common disorders of gut-brain interaction.
