Course Description:

A research based and clinically relevant presentation on the most important aspects of prescribing desiccated thyroid. Learn how to properly assess your patient, safely prescribe NDT, and monitor, to ensure patient success and safety.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Patient Assessment: How to properly assess patients using blood work, physical exam, signs and symptoms to determine if NDT would be a) safe and b) clinically appropriate
  2. Thyroid and T3 physiology: Review of thyroid hormones and how they are produced and function within the body. We will also cover T3 physiology and compare T4 and T3 medications.
  3. Types of Desiccated Thyroid: We will compare the available forms of NDT in Canada and the benefits and disadvantages of each, and how to prescribe them safely and effectively
  4. Prescribing Essentials: How to safely initiate NDT and monitor success with optimal blood work levels, physical exams, signs and symptoms. How to follow up appropriately with your patients to ensure success and safety
  5. Prescribing Advance Techniques: Advanced techniques for more difficult cases will be discussed, including split dosing, filler options, and troubleshooting when things don’t go as planned
  6. Switching from Synthroid: Protocol will be provided for seamlessly switching patients from T4-only medications to NDT

This session is approved for 1.5 Pharmacology Category A CE Credits with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO).  After completing the material, you will automatically receive your CE certificate.
